The melamine board, or melboard, is a formaldehyde resin board. First created in 1955 from melamine-formaldehyde monomer for usage as melamine composites by NASA. Since then, melamine board’s low price and high durability against environmental degradation have made it a popular material choice. Although some laminates may be created from melamine, this is not always the case. Melamine laminates are formed by applying a specific amount of pressure per square inch on a sheet of melamine and formaldehyde, which turns the laminate into a hard plastic.
What Constitutes Melamine Boards?
Besides the hardener and melamine resin, melamine boards also contain fillers. Their thickness ranges from 3 to 50 mm. Melamine boards are popular because they complement today’s homes’ sleek, uncluttered aesthetic.
Melamine Board Benefits
Flexible
The addition of a scratch-resistant acrylic melamine veneer further strengthens our excellent MDF core.
Portable
The melamine MDF is perfect for places where time is of the essence during construction because it is lightweight and easy to move around, thanks to the thin strands that make up the sheet.
Cost Effective
Melamine is a great value compared to other laminates because of its low production costs. Melamine laminates are highly cost-effective due to their longevity and efficiency.
Flawless Finish
It’s possible to find melamine in many different textured and wooden grain patterns. Melamine panels can be used for various purposes. They are a low-cost alternative for incorporating vibrant hues and textured surfaces into your designs and DIY projects.
Reduced Upkeep
The ease with which Melamine sheets can be disinfected is another benefit of utilizing them. Compared to hard, rough surfaces like hardwood, its smoothness makes cleaning much simpler. Melamine is most effective in non-high-stress contexts, such as shop fittings and office furnishings. All dirt can be easily wiped away without damaging the finish. Because the surface is impervious to water and powerful chemicals, cleaning and upkeep are greatly reduced.
Adjustable
The melamine-faced boards are simple to machine and even simpler to install, resulting in a polished, expert look for your projects.
Melamine Board’s Drawbacks
There are drawbacks, of course, to just about anything. This is the situation with melamine. While the material is watertight, any water that makes its way through to the particleboard underneath could lead the melamine to deform. Incorrect installation is a further possible drawback. Though very durable, melamine can chip if the particleboard it is attached to is damaged during installation. Edgebanding is used to conceal the raw edges of melamine boards.
Melamine Board Applications
The burning question now is: “Why is melamine board utilized?” Melamine board is a sturdy material commonly used for cabinetry in the kitchen and bathroom. Shelving, counters, desks, whiteboards, and floors are some places where it excels. Melamine’s popularity as a construction material stems from the fact that it can improve the aesthetics and longevity of materials of poorer quality. Melamine board is a fantastic alternative to genuine wood for those with a limited budget.
